Professor Brian Cox follows Earth's epic journey through space. He takes to the air in a top-secret fighter jet to race the spin of the planet and reverse the passage of the day. In Brazil, a monstrous wave that surges up the Amazon River provides an epic ride of a different kind - chased by a top surfer through the rainforest, this tidal wave marks Earth's constant dance with the Moon. Greenland experiences some of the biggest swings in seasons in the world, but despite the deep freeze, the harsh winter brings opportunity to the Inuit people who live there. All this spectacle here on Earth signals that we are thundering through the universe at breakneck speed. Brian explains why we can't feel it and how understanding motion brings us to understanding the nature of space and time itself, leading to the astonishing conclusion that the past, present and future all exist right now.

In this final episode Professor Brian Cox travels to Iceland, where the delicate splendour of a moonbow reveals the colours that paint our world, and he visits a volcano to explain why the sun shines. By exploring how sunlight transforms the plains of the Serengeti, drives the annual migration of humpback whales to the Caribbean and paints the moon red during a lunar eclipse, Brian reveals the colour signature of our life-supporting planet. As the series progresses, new, more threatening antagonists appear in the show, including the mysterious monster Toffee and former Queen Eclipsa's half-Mewman, half-monster daughter Meteora Butterfly. The plot shifts from the defense of the wand from Ludo to a bigger and more complex narrative focusing on the various conflicts revolving around prejudice against monsters, the ruler ship of Mewni, Mewni's origins, and the very nature of magic itself. Within the live stream processing pipeline, the transcoder module is in charge of converting an incoming RTMP stream into the HLS format with multiple variants (e.g., 1080p, 720p, etc.). Transmuxing the source bitstream is an effective technique, but might cause output HLS to lose its spec compliancy, causing it to be unplayable on certain devices. We will explain the nature of the problem and its ramifications in the next section.

The two transcoded variants 720p60 and 720p30 in this example can share one scaler. As gathered from experiments, scaling is a very computationally expensive step in the transcoding pipeline. Avoiding the unnecessary repeated scaling process altogether can significantly optimize the performance of our transcoder. Figure 8 depicts a threading model of combining the scalers of 720p60 and 720p30 variants.

Our typical incoming bitstreams have 60fps (frames per second), and we transcode them to 30fps for lower bit-rate variants (e.g., 720p30, 480p30, etc.). On the other hand, since Twitch is a global platform, we often receive incoming streams of 50fps, most of which are from PAL countries. In this case, the lower bit-rate variant should be downsampled to 25fps, instead of 30fps.

A software solution, for instance, may use either general purpose (CPU) or graphics processing (GPU) chips, while a hardware solution might force the audio transcoding on to the CPU while optimizing throughput on the GPU. In addition, a number of hardware-based solutions now rely on ASICs, DSPs and FPGAs to fully optimize code for specialized silicon, often generating 50 percent or higher processing throughput over general-purpose solutions. In addition, if adaptive bitrate segmentation is also needed, many hardware-based transcoders will perform that function on a general purpose chipset while leaving the specialized chips to do the heavy lifting.

2. How quickly do you need the final output The cloud-based nature of online transcoding should make even insane deadlines possible with long-form content, but the transcoding is only one-third of the equation. The first part is the uploading of content, which can be at the mercy of a variety of external factors especially on consumer-grade shared internet connectivity such as cable. The third part of the equation is the length of time it takes to move content from the online transcoding solution to a content delivery network (CDN) or other server location.
